The Image of The Word

In Islam, the concept that the Word was revealed to man in its highest and final form in the Qurʾan has made it the foundation of all Muslim artistic expression. The authors of this study present a collection of published transcriptions of Qurʾanic inscriptions on Islamic monuments from Jerusalem, Cairo, and Damascus in order to determine how the inscriptions were used and what patterns, if any, might contribute to an appreciation of the religious content of a work of art. The study is limited to the world of medieval Islam when religious foundations were at their greatest strength and vitality, and found their most integrated expression. Volume I presents the texts and photographs of the inscriptions, while Volume II gives three indexes of the verses: in order of the suras, used geographically, and according to their locations within buildings.

The Free Yemeni Movement, 1935–1962

With the revolution of 1962 came the end of the thousand-year-old imamate in Yemen. The preceding thirty years had witnessed a multiplicity of attempts to bring about reforms in the kingdom. Personal interviews as well as British records, media reports, and other accounts by Middle East specialists are skillfully integrated here to give a comprehensive picture of the time. The often conflicting monarchical, colonial, and Arab nationalist interests in Yemen provide the context for the author's chronology and analysis of the three decades of Free Yemeni activities that paved the way for the Republican Revolution.

The Founding Fathers of the American University of Beirut

AUB's 125th anniversary celebrations in 1992 coincided with the beginnings of Lebanon's return to peace after sixteen years of civil war, throughout which AUB continued to function. This book is a special anniversary tribute to the founders of the university, originally the Syrian Protestant College, who laid the foundations on which the college could grow and develop into one of the leading institutions of higher education in the Middle East. The book documents seven of the original faculty: Daniel Bliss, the first president; David Stuart Dodge; Edwin R. Lewis; Harvey Porter; George E. Post; Cornelius Van Dyck; and John Wortabet. Sections in English and Arabic include speeches, official papers, letters, and articles – some contemporary, others more recent – that demonstrate the values and principles these founding fathers sought to put into practice.
